Frequently Asked Questions

  • What can I expect during my first session?

Early therapy sessions focus on understanding your story, strengths, and hopes for change. You’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you’ve tried before, and what you want to accomplish.

I’ll ask about your history, relationships, and current stressors, but always at your pace.

As therapy unfolds, we’ll revisit your goals, adjust plans, and explore new approaches

together. Some people jump straight into EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, while others begin with talk therapy and consider EMDR later. Some clients prefer talk therapy and aren’t interested in EMDR.

Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all process—it adapts based on your needs and comfort. We’ll keep communication open throughout our sessions. You can always ask questions, request changes to session length or focus, and share any concerns about the process.

Some clients worry they won’t do therapy “right” or “correctly.” Please know that clients cannot do therapy “wrong,” or “Incorrectly,” even in EMDR therapy. The time we meet is truly centered around you and your needs.

  • Can I change the length of my appointment?

    Yes!

You’re never locked into a fixed schedule or session length. If you need extra time or a change in routine, talk it over with me. The process is designed to meet real-life needs, not force you into a mold.

  • How can I tell if therapy is working?

When therapy begins to work, issues often become more difficult or painful before getting better. This is because we’re looking closely at these issues to understand them.. However, within a few weeks or months of therapy many people notice a kinder relationship with themselves. You may start to see yourself through your own eyes, rather than through the lens of others’ expectations. This inner shift brings more confidence, gentleness, and clarity.

I often talk about helping clients “live from the inside out.” Instead of constantly adjusting to what others want, you will begin to trust your own feelings and choices. The effect is subtle at first, but becomes stronger as therapy continues.

My clients describe feeling more empowered, able to set boundaries, and less bogged down by guilt or shame. These changes build a foundation for continued growth, both inside and outside therapy.

  • Will I “be in therapy” forever?

Therapy doesn't come with an expiration date because personal growth doesn't have a deadline. The length of therapy varies greatly depending on individual needs and objectives.

Some might find that a few months of focused, strategic sessions are sufficient to overcome current hurdles. Others may discover that a longer, exploratory path allows them to unearth and heal deeper issues, leading to profound transformations in their personal and professional lives.

Short-term Therapy: Quick Tools for Immediate Concerns

For those feeling overwhelmed by a recent life event or needing strategies to handle specific problems, short-term therapy may be the ideal route. This focused approach allows you to address immediate concerns, equipping you with tools and techniques to manage your situation effectively.

Long-term Therapy: Deep Dives for Lasting Change

If you're grappling with long-standing issues or seeking significant personal growth, long-term therapy offers the space to explore these complexities. This process involves peeling back the layers of your experiences, which can take time but leads to sustainable emotional well-being and a deeper understanding of yourself.

  • I can usually handle my problems. Do I really need therapy?

Have you ever driven a car? If so, you likely know how to check your blindspot - the space around the vehicle that you can’t easily see. By using rearview mirrors and physically turning around to check this space, we can see what’s there.

We, as humans, also have at least one blindspot. Working with a therapist can help you identify and check your blindspot(s) so you can live your life with more self knowledge and insight. This often leads to better decision-making and optimal functioning.

Another way to think about this is to consider whether your symptoms/issues/problems are negatively impacting your day-to-day life. If so, starting therapy might be a good idea.

If you are unsure if therapy can help, schedule a 20-minute consultation call with me.

  • Is there anything else I should know before I start?

    Yes!

For therapy to be effective, it requires clients to work both inside and outside of sessions. This work may be uncomfortable and challenging at times. I am here to provide support and encouragement.

EMDR Sessions

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps people process and heal from distressing memories, trauma, or painful beliefs about themselves.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help the brain “reprocess” stuck experiences.

The results of EMDR may seem magical, but this therapy is evidence-based.
It’s about changing the meaning you attach to difficult events.

Maybe you’ve carried the belief you’re “unlovable” because of a past experience. EMDR helps you see that memory through a different, more adaptive lens. For example, feelings of shame or guilt may be replaced with self-compassion and understanding.

People sometimes expect instant transformation, and occasionally, a single session can spark a dramatic shift. More often, the process unfolds gradually, at a slower pace. EMDR meets you where you are, honoring both your readiness and your comfort level.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a specialized therapy modality that can be used to help clients process and resolve upsetting memories that may be contributing to feelings of distress, including guilt, shame and/or unworthiness.

This method  often accelerates the therapy process, providing more breakthroughs and significant milestones.

  • How does EMDR work?

EMDR follows a clear process and unfolds across several sessions. There are eight stages, starting with getting to know your history, strengths, and emotional resources. I’ll help you build a safe foundation, so you feel equipped to tackle tough memories.

Before addressing any specific event, we’ll explore your beliefs, emotional tolerance, and what kinds of support you need to feel safe.

Only when you are ready do we start working with distressing memories. Here, you revisit the experience in a structured way, checking in with your feelings and body sensations along the way.

I’ll monitor you throughout, asking about emotional intensity and offering guidance. The process can feel slow at times, but results are typically faster than through traditional talk therapy.

The goal is to move from pain or confusion around a memory to a feeling of clarity and acceptance. Once you finish reprocessing a memory, I’ll help you “install” a positive belief, reinforcing your growth for the future.

  • How do I know if EMDR is for me?

Are you willing to get out of your comfort zone for a short time? This type of therapy involves releasing control of your thoughts and allowing your mind to go wherever it feels pulled to go, much like when we fall asleep and start to dream.

Some people find it challenging to let go at first, but a willingness to try is all you really need.

Schedule a 20 minute consultation call with me to learn more. I’m happy to answer your questions!

  • How does EMDR fit into talk therapy?

A big part of therapy involves noticing and gently questioning the beliefs you’ve carried for years. Maybe you grew up feeling unworthy, or always put others’ needs before your own. Therapy helps you see where these patterns came from—and invites you to rewrite the script.

EMDR is especially helpful here, because it targets not just the memory, but the meaning attached to it. Over time, shame or self-doubt gives way to self-acceptance. Even the “little traumas” of everyday life can shift, creating more space for joy and ease.

Talk therapy and EMDR work together to give you tools to respond to life with greater compassion and self-trust, with the ability to see choices in areas where you once felt trapped or limited. While the process looks different for everyone, the outcome is a more authentic, empowered sense of self.

five star review

I’ve been able to let go of painful feelings about myself and gain a sense of confidence since working with Susan. I’ve embraced aspects of myself that I perceived as negative before starting therapy and now actually like myself.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What types of payment do you take?

Most clients pay with a credit, debit or HSA card, but cash and checks are also accepted.

  • Do you accept insurance?

    No.

Many therapists in private practice operate “out of network,” meaning payment is required at the time of service. We provide what’s called a “super bill” (a receipt with a diagnostic code) at the end of each month, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. You may call your insurance company ahead of time to learn if your policy covers out-of-network therapists and if so, what they will reimburse you. When we meet, I’ll answer your questions about how this works so you can make informed choices.

  • Why don’t a lot of therapists accept insurance?

The short answer: To prevent third parties from having a say in your treatment.

The long answer:  The way insurance works today is when insurance agrees to cover therapy they may make decisions about your treatment, including the number of sessions covered and the type of therapy provided. Insurance companies sometimes request session notes, which contain confidential client information.

Also, insurance companies may “clawback” the money they’ve previously paid for sessions. If this happens, the therapist must then charge the client for prior sessions that were understood to be covered by insurance.

  • Do you offer telehealth or virtual appointments?

    Yes!

I can see anyone in the state of Indiana. Even EMDR sessions can be held via telehealth.

  • What is your cancelation policy?

Clients are free to cancel or reschedule any time up to 24 hours before their scheduled session time.

Cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled session time are considered “late cancellations,” and will be charged the full session fee.

Please communicate with me in advance or if there is an emergency.

  • Do you offer evening sessions?

Yes, but I’m often on a waiting list for evening sessions.

Please reach out to me to determine my current evening availability.

  • What types of clients do you work with?

I provide individual therapy to adults. I specialize in working with trauma, unresolved issues from childhood, attachment issues, perfectionism, personal growth as well as ADHD and other neurodiversity issues. I also work with people looking to deepen their relationships with themselves and others.

If you’re not sure whether therapy is right for your needs, schedule a free consult with me. I can help clarify next steps or direct you to specialized resources.
